The Creative Process
I traveled literally half way around the world and hiking two day into the Kumbu Valley to find a medium for my art, oxygen cylinders recovered from Mount Everest. I found and organizing the purchase, transportation and shipping of the cylinders to the US. I then agonized through the time it took for the cylinders to finally reach Maine and getting them through customs.

I succeeded in reaching my goal and can finally start to create the bells and bowls I imagined while watching a National Geographic documentary about the trash on Mount Everest.

Now I grind away years of wear from sub-zero weather, high winds, and the battering of avalanches exposing beautiful sculptures. It is a slow process where design and balance evolve while the bell is being made.

Each bell is hand crafted on a Oneway Lathe. I take my time to create beautiful bells that sound as good as they look. I have developed techniques where woodturning tools are used on the cylinders to cut the grooves, beads, and undulations. I start with an idea in my head of what the collector wants and then I let my imagination run wild. I am inspired by thinking of the person who carried this cylinder to the top of the world, the years it spent basking in the Nepali sun one moment and then being battered by 100 mile an hour winds the next.

The end result is a complete transformation of what was once used and abandoned into delightful sounding and appealing art.
